Internal expert responsible for managing tax reporting, compliance, audits, optimization, and tax planning functions.  Manage the accuracy of tax returns and oversee all aspects of the Company’s tax obligations for various types of entities including C Corps, partnerships, and LLCs.  Obligations include income/franchise, K-1s, distributions, provision, sales and use, property, fuel, GST, withholding requirements, and other various taxes/fees.

 Essential Duties and Responsibilities include the following. Other duties may be assigned.

Manage timely and accurately review of federal, state and local income tax returns, estimates and extensions prepared by third party.

Prepare and review supporting schedules for completion of income tax returns.

Review year-end income tax provision in accordance with ASC 740.

Prepare/Review monthly sales and use tax file, and review sales and use returns prepared by third party advisor.

Review Canadian GST/HST tax returns and Canadian income tax returns.

Review sales and fuel tax exemption certificates and review initial customer invoices for appropriate tax treatment.

Manage various tax audits and respond to federal and state agencies inquiries and tax notices.

Prepare/Review annual property tax working papers and statements.

Perform research on various tax issues including federal and state income taxes as well as sales and use, property, and excise taxes.

Review process and filing calendars to ensure completeness of ongoing filings.

Understand new and pending legislation to identify tax benefits and risks including any potential tax credits that are available for the Company.

Assist in maintaining internal controls and record retention policies to comply with SOX and government regulations.

Maintain tax calendar and keep current with tax technology.

Manage tax staff.

Other duties as assigned.

 Supervisory Responsibilities

This position has supervisory responsibilities.  Directly supervise a team of employees.  Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.  Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and training employees; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

 Education and/or Experience

Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field, 5+ years of related experience and/or training in corporate tax; and 1-3 years of management experience; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Experience:

  • Strong technical research skills with the ability to understand, communicate and address technical matters as they relate to the Company’s business; good business acumen.
  • Experience in a complex income tax and sales tax environment.
  • Strong GAAP accounting background.
  • Capability to manage multiple complex activities at a high level of accuracy and accountability.

 Language Skills

Ability to read, analyze, and interpret Internal Revenue Code sections, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.

 Mathematical Skills

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.  Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

 Reasoning Ability

Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to independently determine tax compliance requirements with no supervision.

 Computer Skills

Advanced knowledge of Microsoft Office applications, specifically Word and Excel. Advanced Knowledge of AX preferred.

 Certificates, Licenses, Registrations

Certified Public Accountant preferred.
